"The Vampire", novel by Lord Byron, France, circa 1820 - Lot 158
"The Vampire", novel by Lord Byron, France, circa 1820
Rare panoramic hand-screen with mechanical unwinding based on Carmontelle's transparencies. The screen is made of cardboard, paper, engraving and gouache highlights. Two side wheels allow views to scroll like in a small theater, or a projection in the spirit of pre-cinema.
The back is covered in green paper, with a hole cut out where the panorama is to be seen, where a gauze allows light to pass through to illuminate the face. At the top, a label reads "Écran panorama/ Par Brevet d'Invention", referring to the Gaucheret brothers' 1820 Paris patent for mechanical screens. Stamped monogram at bottom edge.
"Le Vampire" is a short story by John William Polidori, inspired by Lord Byron, written in 1816, staged in Paris by Charles Nodier in 1820 and performed at the Porte-Saint-Martin theater.
It is followed by
-Portrait of Lord Byron, supposed author of the novel
- Prologue
-Act One
-Act Two
