La pipée aux oiseaux ou la chasse à la chouette, France, cir - Lot 148
La pipée aux oiseaux ou la chasse à la chouette, France, circa 1730-1740
Rare parchment document painted on both sides of a satyric composition. In the center, a woman's beauty attracts all classes of society, with the exception of a peasant. Symbolized by birds with human heads, each character lands on the surrounding branches and finds himself trapped. The composition is accompanied by a caption that begins: "Of all the ages in all the countries, the most learned, and those who should be the wisest, let themselves be caught in the glue when they see a beautiful woman. The little blue kingfisher is the child at heart, representing youth and music. The thistle is a painter. The cock (sic) is a poet, crowned with laurel and holding a feather. The geay (isc) with his hat and flap is a minister. (...) ".
The subject was inspired by an engraving entitled "The Owl Hunt" by Giacomo Franco (1550-1620). A similar composition, painted on canvas, is preserved in the collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Besançon. This painting is said to illustrate the scandal of the Jesuit Father Girard (1680-1733), accused in 1730 of seducing a young girl and exonerated after a resounding trial.
The parchment could be suspended from a wooden rod.
