Box with painted scenes, Iran qâjâr, 19th-20th century Rectangular box closed by a stave lid, made of painted, gilded and lacquered papier-mâché with decoration covering each side. The lid depicts a sovereign in uniform and a bearded, turbaned man in conversation in a carriage decorated with the Persian solar lion, followed by horsemen in uniform and preceded by guards on foot. The shoulder is adorned with a floral frieze punctuated by portraits in medallions and underlined by poetic verses inscribed in Persian nasta'liq. The sides of the box show crowned sovereigns hunting various game (lions, wild boars, caprids) on horseback, with bow, spear or saber, against a backdrop of a mountainous landscape partially decorated with architectural aediculae. The inside of the lid, repainted later, is decorated with a rider chasing a lion with a saber, surrounded by a floral frieze, while the bottom of the box is gilded. 14.5 x 32 x 22 cm Wear, cracks and fissures, small missing parts, inside lid repainted and minor retouching.
