The Guru Nânak and his nine successors, South India, Tanjore, 19th century
Coated, painted and gilded wooden panel depicting Guru Nânakassis in the center under a tree, his head crowned and nimbed and surrounded by his nine successors, a musician and another spectator, a birdcage attached to a branch. The scene is set beneath a poly-lobed arcature with gilded spandrels molded with floral motifs. Small square glass plates encircle the scene, highlighting the guru's crown, mantle and throne.

Some polychromy and wear, small missing parts
Nânak Dev (1469 - 1539) was a great Indian mystic and founder of Sikhism, of which he was the first of ten gurus. A very similar panel is preserved in the Khanuja family collection in the USA and reproduced in Parvinderjit Singh Khanuja, Splendors of Punjab Heritage: Art from the Khanuja Family Collection, 2002, n°1 pp 24-25.
