First edition of fascicules n°I and III of Éléments de mathématique, a treatise published by a group of young French mathematicians under the pseudonym Nicolas Bourbaki, with the aim of breaking new ground in the main branches of pure mathematics. Even today, the name Bourbaki is surrounded by a halo of fascination and mystery. [...] Beyond the various legends and hoaxes surrounding Bourbaki, this group was born out of the hecatomb of French mathematicians during the First World War (Lehning, Toutes les mathématiques du monde, p. 200).
