The continence of Scipio, Europe, circa 1750 Gouache-painted, English-mounted fan leaf of the victorious Roman general, Scipio, renouncing the captive offered to him as tribute, to return her to her fiancé. To the left, ancient ruins, including a mausoleum and a tower reminiscent of the Retz desert. To the right, a busy harbor scene with ships approaching a city wall. Flowers all around, including a sunflower. On the reverse, a seated shepherdess in a mountain setting. Cherry blossoms and peonies in the Chinese style on either side. Finely carved ivory mount, engraved with a shepherd and his sheep alternating with sprays of flowers and a pair of pheasants in the center.
