March of the Marseillais, France, circa 1792-1795
Revolutionary folded fan, the sheet of paper engraved and enhanced with gouache. The French Republic, personified in the center, is carried by a cloud and supported by standards, in front of ships sailing out to sea in the rising sun, evoking the prosperity and rebirth of the Nation.
On the reverse, the score and five verses of Rouget de Lisle's Marseillaise, beginning with "Allons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire est arrivé". The war song for the Army of the Rhine became the Hymne des Marseillais, or March of the Marseillais in July 1792, then the French national anthem, the Marseillaise.
