FLAUBERT (Gustave). Letter to the Municipality of Rouen conc - Lot 285
FLAUBERT (Gustave). Letter to the Municipality of Rouen concerning a vote on Louis Bouilhet. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1872. Paperback, in-8. First edition. One of Gustave Flaubert's rare but holy literary wraths was the one he raised in early February 1872, over the refusal of the majority of the Rouen City Council, including the mayor and his six deputies, to grant a site in the city center to the committee organized in the wake of Bouilhet's death in July 1869. The committee was chaired by Flaubert, whose aim was to dedicate a monument to his friend that would recall his poetic and theatrical successes in the public mind (cf. André Dubuc, "Les dessous de la lettre de Flaubert au Conseil municipal de Rouen" in Les Amis de Flaubert, n°43, 1973, pp. 17-25).
