ROBESPIERRE (Maximilien).
[Paris], De l'Imprimerie nationale, n.d. 20 pages. Together 2 pieces printed in-8, unbound. Some of the most important texts of the French Revolution: Robespierre calls for Louis XVI's head. Louis is not an accused. You are not judges. You are, and can only be, statesmen and representatives of the nation. You do not have a sentence to pass for or against a man, but a measure of public salvation to take, an act of national providence to exercise. [...] Louis was king, and the republic was founded. [...] Louis was dethroned by his crimes. [...] I pronounce this fatal truth with regret... but Louis must die, because the fatherland must live (speech of December 3, 1792). These two speeches by Robespierre, delivered on December 3 and 28, 1792, were decisive in the fate of Louis XVI, who was guillotined on the Place de la Révolution (now Place de la Concorde) on January 21, 1793.
