COMMUNE-AFFRANCHIE. - Jugement de la Commission révolutionnaire, prononcé en présence du Peuple, sur la place de la Liberté, le sept nivos [sic], l'an second de la République française une, indivisible & démocratique. Commune Affranchie, printed by Revol, s.d. [1793]. Leaflet in-folio (53 x 40 one folded sheet. Very rare placard announcing the release of 62 defendants from Commune-affranchie, a judgment handed down by the Revolutionary Commission on 7 nivôse an II (December 27, 1793). The Revolutionary Commission, established in Commune-affranchie, considering that, as much as the people's justice must dwell on traitors who conspire against their liberty and happiness, it must also seek out innocence, bring it out into the open, and restore liberty to those whom misery or seduction would have forced to bear arms against their homeland, to those whom hatred or vengeance would have driven into dungeons ; to patriots whom a refinement [sic] of villainy would have put in irons. According to these considerations and the interrogations undergone by [...]. The Revolutionary Commission dismisses them from the indictment, and orders that they be immediately set free, to return to society, and fulfill the duties of a republican. During the French Revolution, the city of Lyon, having risen up against the Convention, suffered fierce repression: the city was doomed to destruction, numerous massacres were perpetrated, and on October 12, 1793 it was renamed Commune-affranchie or Ville-affranchie.
