Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) played a key role in the government during the Terror and contributed to the fall of Robespierre. Accused of revolting against the Convention, he was deported to Cayenne. These memoirs, held by some to be apocryphal, concern Mexico between 1805 and 1817 (Sabin, n°5390).
