1787 ASSEMBLY OF NOTABLES. - Procès-verbal... - Lot 103 - Rossini
1787 ASSEMBLY OF NOTABLES. - Procès-verbal de l'Assemblée de notables, tenue à Versailles, en l'année 1787. Paris, De l'Imprimerie royale, 1788. In-4, marbled basane, ornate spine, marbled edges (Binding of the period). First edition, illustrated with an engraved plan of the Salle d'Assemblée des notables at the session presided over by the King. Convened on February 22, 1787 by Calonne following the threat of bankruptcy due in part to France's participation in the American War of Independence, the Assembly of Notables, composed mainly of the privileged, was violently hostile to the proposed tax reforms. Calonne was forced to resign and was replaced by Loménie de Brienne. Attached is an autograph letter signed by Calonne (one page in-4), dated February 28 [1787] and addressed to one of the princes presiding over the offices, in which the minister specifies the need for a clear instruction signed by the King... Printed bookplate Jacobi Constant Parochi Sti Trophimi. Binding a little worn, small hole in the blank of the faux-titre.
