RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme). Tableaux de la vie ou les Mœurs du dix-huitième siècle. Neuwied sur le Rhin, Chez la Société typographique, & à Strasbourg, Treuttel, s.d. 2 volumes in-18, blue half-chagrin with corners, spine decorated with a repeated gilt fleuron, gilt head, untrimmed (Late 19th century binding). First edition of this collection of short stories, illustrated with 17 handsome copper-engraved figures after Freudenberg and Moreau le jeune. The short stories are taken from Monument du costume, and the engravings are reductions of the large prints in Restif's book, which was published in folio format in 1789. Copy of Ludovic Halévy (1834-1908), with his bookplate, playwright who co-wrote the libretto of Carmen with Meilhac. Spine slightly faded.
