First edition, with engraved frontispiece after Coypel, 5 maps and 15 fold-out technical plates. A treatise by Jacques Cassini (1677-1756), one of a dynasty of famous astronomers, on the exact shape of the Earth. He firmly claimed that the Earth was an elongated ellipsoid, but geodetic expeditions sent to Peru and Lapland in the 1730s proved him wrong, providing evidence of the Earth's flattening at the poles. Uniform foxing to some sections and several engravings, marginal wetness to many sections. Missing top cover.
