Paris, Saillant & Nyon, 1772. 2 volumes in-8, marbled calf, ornate smooth spine, marbled edges (Binding of the period). First in-8 edition of the account of the voyage of Bougainville (1729-1811), who commanded the first French scientific circumnavigation, illustrated with 21 maps and 3 fold-out plates depicting Polynesian boats. Le Voyage de Bougainville marks a milestone in the maritime and philosophical literature of the Age of Enlightenment (Étienne Taillemite in En français dans le texte, no. 167). Stain on map no. 17, small crack at bottom of one leaf. Small loss at head, upper head of volume II restored, one corner damaged, spine a little rubbed.
