AMEILHON (Hubert Pascal). Éclaircissemens... - Lot 1 - Rossini
AMEILHON (Hubert Pascal). Éclaircissemens sur l'inscription grecque du monument trouvé à Rosette. Paris, Baudoin, Floréal year XI (1803). In-4, half-brown basane, smooth spine decorated (period binding). First edition, illustrated with a large copper-engraved fold-out plate. An important memoir on the famous Rosetta Stone: it contains the first French translation of the Greek inscription on the stele, and one of the very first printed reproductions - here partial - of this monument. Ameilhon (1758-1838), historian and member of the Institut, was commissioned to study the Greek part of the inscription. He presented his work to the Institute in early 1801 and published it two years later in this memoir, which contains the Greek text of the inscription in cursive script, with its "very literal" Latin interpretation, and a continuous French translation of the entire inscription (cf. Bénédicte Savoy, "Objet d'observation et d'intelligence"... in Études germaniques, 2009/4, n°256, pp. 799-819, and Wallis Budge, The Rosetta Stone, 1989). Light spotting to plate. Spine rebacked with old spine reapplied.
