Beautiful set of deniers à épouser, treizains... - Lot 1 - Rossini
Beautiful set of deniers à épouser, treizains and boxes à treizain. The "deniers à épouser" were born from the imitation of the copper deniers tournois issued from Charles IX to Louis XIV. Most of these are thin strips of silver, known in numismatics as "Bractéates", stamped with a corner. Sometimes, these blanks would be assembled, to stiffen them and complete them with new legends. They were offered in sets of thirteen, often contained in small cylinder-shaped boxes, sometimes engraved with matrimonial symbols, and were blessed at the wedding ceremony. The classification of the numbers to follow is that of Mr. Henri Térisse's remarkable work, for the "D" deniers and "T" boxes. These objects are not dated, but their style suggests that they were made mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries. Silver box engraved on the lid with 2 flaming hearts pierced by an arrow (T = missing), containing 9 bracteate denarii with the legend +ESPO+VSER around a Maltese cross (Type D38, but reverse only, not assembled). Box in fine condition, denarii superb.
