Ange PITOU (1767-1842) chansonnier and writer,... - Lot 235 - Rossini
Ange PITOU (1767-1842) chansonnier and writer, author of anti-revolutionary songs, fifteen times arrested then deported to Cayenne at 18 fructidor; hero of Alexandre Dumas's novel, and of Lecocq's operetta La Fille de Mme Angot.L.A.S., Paris May 16, 1816, to M. de LESCARENE at the Ministry of the Interior; 4 pages in-fol. Rare and long letter about his book in favor of the monarchy. "In tracing the misfortunes of the Stuarts and the Bourbons, I proposed to myself to bring the French back to the monarchy. The convention had worked with all its means to distort morality and religion to suppress in the heart of the generation the principles which had identified us for centuries with a legitimate and rational monarchy. Buonaparte arrives in the middle of the ruins and founds a government and a monarchy for his soldiers, for his glory and for his family; he chains fortune, glory and our youth to his chariot. He corrupts our ancient institutions; he amalgamates them; he flatters, punishes and deceives all men [...] The habit of his successes was going to naturalize us to his iniquities when the sky, having fractured him with blindness and misfortunes, suddenly gave us back our kings and our legitimate institutions"... Pitou explains how he wanted to "destroy the charm and bring back the youth and the new generation to the primitive existence of peace and monarchy", exposes the plan he followed, speaks about the death of Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, Madame Elisabeth, Louis XVII, etc. Former collection André Saudemont (15-16 March 1983, n° 500).
