LYON. Two interesting letters, August-December 1794. L.A. (unsigned), [Lyon] 10 fructidor II (August 27, 1794), to citizen Robineau in Aix; 2 pages in-4, address with postmarked city-postage. ... "It appeared these days a proclamation of the Representatives, sent to make the Happiness of the people and to make finally leave the oppression of a city which has been suffering for so long. They go into many details which have given the greatest pleasure to all the good citizens. It is said that joy is coming back to all faces and that one hopes that tranquility will be maintained. [...] a crowd of foreigners and locals who did not dare to approach this unhappy city are arriving. [...] everyone blesses the Convention and the Representatives it has sent"... J.V. LE CANU. On the turmoil and popular movements in Lyon, some of them caused by "mathevons [...] a name used to designate the squanderers, the denunciators, in general the men of blood and robbery"; arrest of three officers of the Battalion of the Côte d'Or who heard shouting "Vive le Roi" (Long live the King) without protest. The news of the lifting of the maximum has made the grain rise considerably... "Lyon is divided into two parties, the Sectionnaires and denonciateurs on the one hand [...] and on the other are all those who have been persecuted. I look at it as two armies in presence, which only wait for a favorable moment. In the midst of it all are agitators who stir up one another. [...] I hope that with firmness and supplies we will be able to avoid the hazards of the moment"...
