WERNER Joseph dit Le Jeune (Attributed to) Bern... - Lot 30 - Rossini
WERNER Joseph dit Le Jeune (Attributed to) Bern 1637 - id. ; 1710 Allegory of a courtesan during the reign of Louis XIV In the background, in a niche, an antique sculpted couple, a faun embracing a shepherd with a pan flute. On the right, hidden by the drapery opening on the vestibule, the legs of a sculpted figure. In the foreground, Cupid, sitting on a thick red cushion, near his bow and quiver. Oil on copper; affixed on panel. H. 35 - L. 21,5 cm Provenance: 1 - Christie's Paris, March 30, 2015, No. 33, "Allegorical Portrait of a Woman". 2 - Paris, Private Collection, as "Portrait of Henrietta of England". General bibliography : Claudine Charbonnier, La courtisane de Plaute à Ovide ; Bulletin de l'Association Guillaume Budé, 1916, n° 28. The model is represented in the manner of an ancient courtesan, her chest widely uncovered, her body tightly wrapped in the folds of a red drape, a musical instrument in her right hand, an attribute of Greek hetaerae (Cf. C. Charbonnier, pp 464 & 182). Behind her, two groups of ancient sculptures echo the famous courtesan Phryne, mistress of the sculptor Praxiteles. The portrait reproduced here can be compared to the one by Nino de Lenclos (1620 - 1705) kept at the Château de Bussy-Rabutin (anonymous) and to the one by Louis Ferdinand Elle the elder (1612 - 1689) at the Château de Versailles. Joseph Werner stayed in Paris, from 1663, at the invitation of Louis XIV, before leaving for Germany around 1666 - 1667 (Cf. Nathalie Lemoine - Bouchard. Painters in miniature 1650 - 1850 P. 536 - Paris 2008)
