MELON (Jean-François). Political essay on trade. Amsterdam, - Lot 349
MELON (Jean-François). Political essay on trade. Amsterdam, François Changuion, 1742. In-12, granite basane, cold fillet, ornamented spine, cream title, red edges (Binding of the time). INED, n°3123. One of the oldest theoretical treatises on mercantilism. The author, Law's first secretary, was a precursor of the physiocrats and a supporter of economic liberalism (cf. Spengler, p. 60). His work, originally published in 1734, forms a small encyclopedia of the then prevailing notions of the general economy of a state, which earned Melon the title of the first French theorist of the mercantile system (Harsin). Minor rubbing to the binding, otherwise a fine copy from the Starhemberg library (wet stamp).
