COURIER (Paul-Louis). Petition for villagers who are prevent - Lot 323
COURIER (Paul-Louis). Petition for villagers who are prevented from dancing. Paris, Chez les Marchands de nouveautés, 1822. Booklet in-8 of 28 pages, disjointed. In French in the text, n°233. First edition of the most famous pamphlet of the author. The petition aimed to annul a prefectural decree taken at the request of a young and zealous priest who forbade villagers to dance on Sundays in the square of Azai: Courier goes beyond the rural framework of a simple village chronicle - admirably evoked - to denounce the intrusion of the Church and of the government in the private life of each one (Paul-Louis Courier, cat. BnF, 1972, n°250). An attractive copy, as issued, with its printed cover.
