SECTION DE LA CITÉ. P.S. by the president Thomas MAILLARD, 2 - Lot 290
SECTION DE LA CITÉ. P.S. by the president Thomas MAILLARD, 2 other members and the secretary, May 28, 1793; 2 pages in-4, vignette and header Section de la Cité, Assemblée générale permanente. Important historical document emanating from the Section de la Cité, "citadel of sans-culottism" according to A. Soboul, and bearing the signature of the president Thomas MAILLARD who played a capital role in the preparation of the days of May 31 and June 2, 1793, as shown in this document where the Section protests against the arrests of the Commission of the Twelve (notably Hébert) and sets in motion the insurrection. "The extraordinary assembly convened and deliberating on the current state of the Republic of the City of Paris and mainly on the arbitrary arrests of the various patriots known by their civic-mindedness and their enlightenment", considers that these are acts of despotism that infringe on the sovereign rights of the people, and that the Sections must unite to form "a fessau against which all the efforts of the enemies of liberty and legality will break down". It declares itself permanently and "invites in the sacred name of the fatherland each one of the Sections to meet fraternally in its bosom this evening to deliberate in common on the means to be taken in the current occurrence, means which surely will make triumph patriotism, the freedom and the equality"...
