Jacques-Pierre BRISSOT DE WARVILLE (1754-guillotiné... - Lot 287 - Rossini
Jacques-Pierre BRISSOT DE WARVILLE (1754-guillotiné 1793) conventionnel (Eure-et-Loir), Girondin. L.A., May 19 [1793], to a compatriot; 2 pages small in-4. Poignant letter shortly before the proscription of the Girondins. ... "For 2 or 3 days, we have been in a horrible turmoil. Half of the deputies do not sleep in their usual lodgings. I did not leave mine yet; but I have more than anybody the conviction that one prepares us a Saint-Barthélémy. A letter from Dumont d'Oisemont to Deraux d'Amiens [...] expressly states that we still need a very copious day on August 10, and that it will not be long. Some harangueurs of the place, and I heard it, also say: one has guillotined enough heads of cooks, of carriage drivers; it is conventional heads that one must guillotine, and always those of the 22 proscribed are the first ones that one quotes. Here is the terrible position in which we are. The dissolution of the Convention is the wish of the factions and of our enemies. We will remain at our post, we will make a Constitution, or we must perish. [...] Mr. Dargnier [...] whom I placed yesterday at the session, was very strongly affected by the roarings in the galleries at the voice of Marat threatening us to have our throats cut by the sovereign people "...Old collections Benjamin Fillon (1878 n° 506), then Patrice Hennessy (1958 n° 147).
