VALMY. Period manuscript, Armée du Centre. Combat du 20 7bre, fuitte et deffection de l'armée prussiennes, reprise de Verdun, [septembre 1792]; 4 pages in-4. Battle of Valmy. The account returns to the events of August: "the places of Longwy and Verdun sold and delivered to the Prussian army, Lafayette's conduct unmasked and his flight with all his staff; our troops dispersed. [...] But at the first cry of the fatherland in danger, every man becomes a soldier [...] generals who have the confidence of the nation assemble the troops and soon this Brunswick which had only to present itself to conquer will know Frenchmen fighting for freedom. The woods of Argonne will be our Termopilles and the department of Moselle the tomb of its soldiers. Faced with the advance of the Prussian army, the generals Dumouriez, Beurnonville and Kellermann gathered their troops. On September 20, Kellermann was attacked and had time to put his army in battle order: "the cannonade began and the artillery fire was lively and sustained on both sides for fourteen hours. In spite of the superiority of numbers, Brunswick never dared to attack our army which was only 17,000 h." The losses were considerable on both sides and the Prussian army "weakened and raised camp [...] Beurnonville and Kellermann harassed it in its retreat and took prisoners every day." Arrived at Verdun, the Prussians crossed the Meuse and agreed "to evacuate the city and the citadel of Verdun" on October 14, 1792... 5 manuscripts in the same hand (19 p. in-4) are attached: notes on the beginning of the work of the National Convention, on the siege of Lille, the siege of Thionville, the general Custine and the army of the Rhine, the capture of Savoy and the county of Nice...
