Pierre-Victurnien VERGNIAUD (1753-guillotiné... - Lot 136 - Rossini
Pierre-Victurnien VERGNIAUD (1753-guillotiné 1793) conventionnel, the illustrious orator of the Girondin party. L.A.S., Bordeaux May 5, 1791, to M. Pradine, "priest of Meynac in Bordeaux"; 1 page in-4, address (2 portraits attached). Magnificent lesson of civism and patriotism to a resigned priest. As administrator of the Gironde, he reminds his correspondent, who has resigned, of his obligations: "The Electoral Assembly has long since dissolved. It separated in the firm belief that you would go to Meynac to fulfill the pastoral functions". As a citizen, he allows himself a few observations: "It would result from your late resignation, that you would have prevented the electoral assembly from appointing a constitutional priest [...] and that by that, you would have exposed this parish either to lack of a pastor, or to keep one who, refractory to the national laws, would be able to foment trouble, discord, and hatred of this Constitution to which you are devoted. [...] if it is beautiful to have modesty, it is also praiseworthy and sometimes necessary to make it yield to the movements of a beautiful zeal that in difficult times it is a real desertion to refuse to fight under the pretext that one lacks strength; finally that in circumstances similar to those in which we are, the first duty of a good citizen is to surrender without hesitation, and to hold inviolably to the post which is assigned to him by the fatherland. Forgive the frankness of this language. Patriots owe each other an unreserved communication of the ideas they believe useful to the Common Cause"...
