Hubert LYAUTEY (1854-1934) marshal. Autograph... - Lot 667 - Rossini
Hubert LYAUTEY (1854-1934) marshal. Autograph manuscript, [1903?]; 6 1/2 pages fol. An account of his appointment to command the subdivision of Aïn Sefra in 1903. While he was a colonel in the 14th Hussars in Alençon, he received a summons from the minister. Unaware of the reason, and extremely worried, he initially thought that he was being put on non-active status at Mont-Valérien, but on arriving at the Montparnasse train station, he learned from the newspapers that he had been appointed commander of the Aïn Sefra subdivision "with glowing comments [...] on the minister's happy choice of Gallieni's pupil to go and take charge of this South Oranese frontier, whose situation had just moved public opinion to the highest degree [? [...] What is amusing is that my divisional general of maneuvers, Galerson [...] had told us how serious he found the situation and pitied both the one who could be in charge of settling it on the spot, as well as his immediate chief, the General of the Oran division, saying "I would not want to be in their place". However, I was the one who was in charge of settling the situation on the spot, and he was the one who was sent to the Commander of the Oran division two months later"...
