Joseph WEBER (1755-1822) milk brother of... - Lot 618 - Rossini
Joseph WEBER (1755-1822) milk brother of Marie-Antoinette, about whom he left Memoirs. L.A.S., London July 14, 1808, [to Charlotte ATKYNS]; 3 pages in-4. He is so grateful for the encouragement he has received in the task he has undertaken and for "the generous support which so many respectable people have lent me" that he strives to make it ever more worthy of the goal set and of general approval: "The second volume of this work has already earned me such flattering and I dare to say so unanimous suffrages", that he wants to make it "even more complete by Bibliographical Historical Notes on almost all the characters I have mentioned on the role they played in the French Revolution and on their destiny". He sends him these notes contained in 4 additional sheets, "which add to the expenses of the work those of an increase of 12000 sheets of printing more"... He counts on the zeal of his subscribers that he does not think to disappoint... "By raising in the bosom of Noble England this Monument of my worship towards the august family of Louis XVI, I was supported by the hope to deserve the interest and the suffrages of a Nation which showed, by its innumerable benefits towards the foreigners, to whom it gives asyle, how it knows how to console the misfortune and to reward the fidelity "... [This is his Memoirs concerning Marie Antoinette, Archduchess of Austria, Queen of France; and on several important periods of the French Revolution from its origin until October 16, 1793, day of the martyrdom of Her Majesty (London, 1804-1809), 3 vols.]
