Jean-Baptiste JOURDAN (1762-1833) marshal of France. P.S., Cologne H.Q. 11 Vendemiaire V (October 2, 1796); 3/4 page in-fol. on his letterhead Jourdan, General-in-Chief of the Army of Sambre et Meuse, large vignette of the Army of Sambre et Meuse (paper a bit creased; engraved portrait attached). "The General-in-Chief attests that Citizen Ruffin, battalion commander, aide-de-camp to the Army of Sambre et Meuse, has served under his orders and that he has always conducted himself in such a way as to merit his esteem and confidence. He has moreover shown in all occasions a lot of zeal, intelligence and bravery"... The magnificent vignette is the famous vignette with the balloon recalling the victory of Fleurus [n° 68 of Boppe & Bonnet]. One sees there the Republic, balloons, and Jourdan leaving on horseback to the combat...
