Joseph LAKANAL (1762-1845) conventionnel... - Lot 538 - Rossini
Joseph LAKANAL (1762-1845) conventionnel (Ariège), organizer of public education. L.A.S., 9 germinal IV (29 March 1796), [to Bernardin de SAINT-PIERRE]; 5 pages in-4. Beautiful letter to Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. He has worked hard to defend the interests of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre; soon the lawyer will be able to pursue the counterfeiters, "the corsairs who have plundered you [...] if there are new obstacles I will remove them or I will break them". Lakanal saw Ginguené: "it is the honor and the duty of the government to fulfill with exactitude the commitment that the nation has contracted with you. It is for her a crying debt"; Lakanal will obtain a decree of the Directory. Lakanal encourages his friend to come to the public session of the Institute: "it will offer little interest to the public if it does not see there, if it does not hear there, the immortal author of the Studies of the nature". He describes his life in a peaceful place, "ignored of my colleagues, of the importunate, of all the world"; he will welcome there with joy his friend. He adds to finish: "Oh! that I desire to tear myself away from my occupations, from the pains that I endure at the sight of the evils which desolate my country, and to go to spend near you two days of peace and happiness!"...Former collection Patrice Hennessy.
