Nicolas STOFFLET (1751-1796) general of the... - Lot 461 - Rossini
Nicolas STOFFLET (1751-1796) general of the Vendée, shot in Angers. Manuscript, period copy, Maulévrier January 25, 1795; 4 pages small in-4 (wetness). The only known trace of this disappeared proclamation. Stofflet addresses himself to the "misguided Frenchmen [...] stained with the blood of our kings, soiled by the massacre of a million victims, by the burning and devastation of our properties, what are your titles to inspire confidence and security? Would it be the torture of Robespierre and Carrier? But nature rose against these monsters, the cry of public vengeance devoted them to death. By proscribing them you have only obeyed necessity. The French must ask for forgiveness for the crimes of the Revolution... He goes on at length about the massacres, the fires, the devastations, etc. Attached is a printed poster, Armée des Côtes de l'Océan ... Judgment that condemns to the death penalty Stofflet, commander in chief of the rebel army in the Vendée; Lichtenhain, Moreau, Devarannes, and Pinot his adherents"..., 6 ventôse IV (February 25, 1796; imp. Malassins in Alençon).
