Joseph LAKANAL (1762-1845) politician, conventionnel (Ariège), organizer of public education. P.A.S., Bergerac 6 prairial II (May 25, 1794); 1 page and a quarter on his letterhead Lakanal, Representative of the People, delegated by the National Convention and its Committee of Public Salvation, in the department of Dordogne and surrounding departments, vignette and motto Peace to the People, War to the Tyrants, red wax seal. Curious document for "General measures against selfishness". Order given to the young citizen Monbrun to answer within 4 days to the following questions: " 1° What was your fortune in 1789; 2° what is your current fortune; 3° what pecuniary sacrifices did you make for the revolution; 4° did you fill public functions since 1789; 5° what use are you to your country. The answers will be verified with extreme care. The imposture will be punished of the reclusion ". 3 P.A.S. are joined for his exile in the United States: 2 promissory bills (December 1815), and a note giving his address in America: "Lakanal, in Gallaline Country, on the banks of the Hoio, in Kintiki, [...] Indiana, United States of America"; plus a copy of his birth certificate (1875).
