Ottoman lantern in tombak - Lot 169
Ottoman lantern in tombak Mercury gilded copper (tombak) and cotton canvas Turkey, 19th century, Ottoman Empire H. 10 cm - Diam. 25 cm This folding tombak lantern, of the so-called "concertina" type (in reference to the musical instrument), presents on the upper part a decoration of tulips alternating with openwork medallions in relief, and various registers of floral and geometric motifs. The openwork lid is removable, attached to a handle that allowed it to be hung or carried in the hand. The lower part in copper, also partly openwork, is decorated on the underside with a central rosette surrounded by fleurons, garlands and floral motifs. The central part is made of cotton canvas folded in the manner of an accordion.
