Safavid ceramic with Qajar mounts Siliceous paste with cobalt glaze painted in metallic lustre, and brass inlaid with black paste Iran, 17th - 18th century for the body 19th century, Qadjara period for the mounts H. 35 cm This composite ewer has a globular ceramic body with a metallic lustre painted decoration of a rising sun and a lion (emblem of Persia) on a background of vegetal motifs. They present a chiseled and inlaid decoration of black paste on the bottoms, with abundant motifs of arabesques, palmettes, animals and birds in mandorles. For a Safavid ewer of the same period and decoration as our ceramic, see the one in the Victoria & Albert Museum under inventory number 924-1876.
