Portrait of a courtesan - Lot 222
Portrait of a courtesan Polychrome and gold pigments on wood Iran, 20th century for the painting H. 72.7 cm - L. 81.5 cm 19th century frame The painting depicts a young woman richly dressed and adorned with jewels, lying against an embroidered cushion, next to her attendant. The central panel, which follows the iconography popular in the Zand and Qadjara periods, is set in a wooden frame with floral decoration and four scalloped cartouches with Gul-O-Bulbul (Rose and Nightingale) decoration on a gold background. The ancient frame was probably intended to hold a mirror, on which the central painting was then placed.
