NB: Madeleine Lemaire was a woman painter who was very fashionable in Paris at the end of the 19th century. She held a salon frequented by all the Parisian high society. Flowers and especially roses are her favourite subjects. See a very similar fan preserved in the collections of the Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, illustrated on p. 33 in "L'éventail, miroir de la Belle Epoque", 1985.
