The author, historian and lawyer born in La Rochelle around 1710, lived for about thirty years in Santo Domingo where he was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. of agriculture in Cap-Français. He had collected a quantity of notes in order to write a general history of the New World; which have remained unpublished and are published here by his nephew Mr. Nougaret. This rare work contains observations on Curaçao, Grenada, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, the United States, Louisiana and Havana, Mexico, Peru or Chile. An interesting Memoir on the diseases of Santo Domingo occupies pp. 409-504. A copy rebound in a morocco binding in the style of Bradel-Derome. Handwritten ex-libris on the title: Ex-libris Boyenval Santo Domingo 1791. The false title is missing. Modern title piece, hinges and caps restored.
