ZIENKOWICZ (Leon). The Costumes of the Polish People. Paris, Polish Bookshop; Strasbourg, at the publisher's; Leipzig, Brockhaus, 1841. In-4, plum half-chagrin with corners, double fillet, spine gilt, gilt edges (contemporary binding, signedHérard). Colas, 3115. Original edition of this very rare collection dedicated to the Friends of the Polish Cause, which features costumes worn in different regions of Poland, then under Russian rule, and victim of a cruel and ridiculous ukase that forbade Poles from using these costumes. The collection comprises 39 plates lithographed by Simon in Strasbourg, based on drawings by J. Lewicki and A. Wittmann, and 2 music plates. Our copy, with the coloured and gummed plates, contains only 20 plates (out of the 39), including 6 of military costumes, and 2 music plates. A few freckles, back entirely faded.
