HOMBERG (Octave) and JOUSSELIN (Fernand).... - Lot 128 - Rossini
HOMBERG (Octave) and JOUSSELIN (Fernand). An adventurer in the 18th century, the Knight of Aeon (1728-1810). Paris, Plon-Nourrit, 1904. In-8, red morocco, Jansenist, small gilded mask on the back, red morocco lining with large lace, moire guards, gilded edges on witnesses, cover, case (Ch. Meunier 1904). The edition is adorned with 2 portraits and a facsimile. Superb copy in lined morocco, enriched with an autographed note (one page in-8): At the Cte de Vergennes, Mrs Bertin dressed me as one of the girls in the Queen's apartment... I think my beauty would be greater, my shame less with less pompous & simpler clothes as befits a girl's modesty. Two other letters were added, one addressed to Monsieur Monsieur Déon, Minister Plenipotentiary of France in London; the other a note from the Duke de Broglie to the Knight of Aeon sent to Tonnerre in Burgundy. Attached is an autograph letter from the Chevalier d'Éon (3 pages in-4) addressed to Mr Christie Jr. in London, dated Oxford 11th May 1796, in which he asks, among other things, for an estimate of his books: What afflicted me most in my life was the forced sale of my library in the tems I was busy working on the memory of my extraordinary life in the eyes of the public, & even more extraordinary in my own eyes...
