VILLERMÉ (René). Table of the physical and... - Lot 121 - Rossini
VILLERMÉ (René). Table of the physical and moral state of the workers, employed in the cotton, wool and silk factories. Paris, Jules Renouard et Cie, 1840. 2 volumes in-8, fawn half calf, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Original edition of this landmark 19th century text on the labour issue. The work is the result of the vast survey carried out in 1835-1837 by physician and sociologist Louis-René Villermé (1782-1863) on working conditions in textile factories, mainly in Mulhouse, Lyon, Lille, Amiens and Rouen. The author studied in detail the material conditions of the workers (housing, food, wages, etc.), their social conditions (poverty, depraved morals, alcoholism, etc.), the influence of modern machines on the organisation of the industry and the fate of the workers, etc. His observations on the condition of children employed in factories are edifying and are at the origin of the Act of 22 March 1841 on child labour (cf. In French in the text, No. 256). The author thus prepared the legislation on child labour in factories, and he provided good material for economic science in all matters relating to industrial labour (Adolphe Blanqui, Histoire de l'économie politique en Europe, 1845, vol. II, p. 423). Superb copy, nicely bound at the time, virtually freckless. The spine has lightened and now has a blond colour; small shock on the back of volume II.
