SAINT-PIERRE (Charles-Irénée Castel de).... - Lot 111 - Rossini
SAINT-PIERRE (Charles-Irénée Castel de). Speech on polysynody [...]. Amsterdam, Du Villard &Changuion, 1719. In-12, brown calf, spine decorated, red title coin (contemporary binding). Second edition, published one year after the original in-4 format. The polysynody refers to the system of administration instituted by the Regent from 1715 to 1718, which consisted of replacing each minister by a council. He [St. Peter] thought he was free with the change of government and to give free rein to his imagination in favour of the public good. He therefore wrote a book he called Polysynody, in which he painted a natural picture of the despotic and often tyrannical power exercised by secretaries of state and the Comptroller General of Finance during the last reign.... As soon as he appeared, he caused a general uprising of the entire former government and of all those who still flattered themselves that they would return after the regency (Saint-Simon). The author was for this reason expelled from the Academy and his book suppressed. Freckles, wetness affecting the first three notebooks, inversion of leaves in the notebook F. Dos redone.
