SAINT-PIERRE (Charles-Irénée Castel de).... - Lot 109 - Rossini
SAINT-PIERRE (Charles-Irénée Castel de). Abstract of the Perpetual Peace Project. Rotterdam, Jean-Daniel Beman, Et se vend à Paris chez Briasson, 1729. In-12, speckled calf, spine decorated, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Original edition. Abstract of the famous Perpetual Peace Project published in 1712-1713 in which the author proposed the creation of a general alliance of all the sovereigns of Europe: he advocated a European Diet, sitting in Utrecht, composed by the representatives of each country. The territorial situation of the participating nations being guaranteed, the Diet settles disputes between states through mediation and arbitration. Armed intervention is only provided for against any member of the alliance who does not comply with the arbitration decision (cf. In French in the text, no. 137). This project, very modern for the time, in a way prefigures our Europe today. Some handwritten corrections made at the time to the text. Clear moulding at the foot of some leaves. Small work of verse touching a cap, a bit and a cut, rubbing at the binding.
