PEPPER (Peter). Travels of a philosopher.... - Lot 102 - Rossini
PEPPER (Peter). Travels of a philosopher. Paris, Chez la citoyenne Dupuis, De l'Imprimerie de Hautbout, l'An V [1797]. In-8, basane racinée, gilt roulette, smooth spine decorated, red title coin (contemporary binding). Sabin, number 63719. Partly original edition, decorated with a frontispiece engraved on copper, unsigned, depicting farmers. The book contains the author's observations on the customs and arts of the peoples of Africa, Asia and America, and provides a survey of agriculture in Asia and Africa. Among other things, there is a Letter to Father Coeur doux on Indian painting, Observations made in Cochinchine, and an Excerpt from the trip made in 1769-1770 to the Philippines and the Moluccas under the command of Évrard de Trémigon to search for grocery trees. In June 1768, in [Pierre Poivre's absence] and without his knowledge, Voyages d'un Philosophe was published. ...] The work was full of what can be called the physiocratic spirit; several of the essential principles of the School were even demonstrated (cf. Weulersse, vol. I, p. 158). The volume opens with an Editor's Warning and a Notice on the life of Poivre by Dupont de Nemours (pp. V-LXXXVIII). Frontispiece partially detached. A few slight freckles. Epiderminations at the binding.
