NICOLAS (Augustin). If torture is a safe... - Lot 95 - Rossini
NICOLAS (Augustin). If torture is a safe means of verifying secret crimes; moral and legal dissertation. Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1681. In-12, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine ornate, two-coloured title and coat of arms in the entrenfs, inside scroll, red edges (Binding: 18th century). Caillet, n°7986 (edition to the date of 1682). A rare, original edition of this important and vibrant plea for the abolition of torture: So many poor innocents who have perished for so long by the horrific violence of torture. So many poor women, so cruelly martialized, so unjustly condemned to a spell on concessions torn away by unbearable torments, extend their hands to the throne of the great Monarch of the Universe [...] will you doubt, Sire, ... that you will lend your glorious name to the reform of so many cruel abuses? (Dedication to Louis XIV). until the traditional punitive system has been thoroughly reconsidered, there will be very little radical criticism of torture.... The most famous of these criticisms is that of Nicolas (Michel Foucault, Surveiller et punir). Freckles, wet a few leaves. We've connected to the sequel: [LAUNAY (François de)]. Treatise on hunting rights. Paris, Gabriel Quinet, 1681. Original edition of this historical and legal treatise (cf. Thiébaud, col. 561: rare; and Schwerdt, t. I, p. 303). A copy of the arms and figures of Gabriel-Paulin Prondre de Guermantes (1650-1723), an enlightened bibliophile, Receiver General of Finance in Lyon and President of the Paris Audit Office. It bears on a counterplate the ex-libris of the important hunting library set up by Schwerdt in the 20th century. Restorations to the binding (headpieces, corners and bits).
