[MIRABEAU (Victor de Riquetti, Marquis de) and François QUESNAY]. The Philosophy (1763) wasgenerallyaccepted as the first of the four text-books of physiocratorthodoxy (Schumpeter, p. 225). An economic table engraved on copper, repeated pp. 118-119, and a pretty wooden vignette at the head of p. 1 depicting the Emperor of China plowing. The book, written by Mirabeau with the close collaboration of Quesnay (the latter wrote the entire seventh chapter: Relationships between expenditures), is the most complete exposition of the physiocratic system: the new science had not yet been exposed with such breadth. It was no longer a work of circumstance, a plan for immediate reform proposed to remedy a crisis: it was the pure and simple, masterful and complete exposition of a doctrine full of resources, no doubt, but of a superior truth, whose principles were to apply to all countries and all times. ...] It was indeed the "Pentateuch" of the future "sect" (Weulersse, vol. I, p. 85). It is said that it is in this work that the term mercantile system first appears (headline print, p. 329). Another proof of the engraved table is missing.
