LE TROSNE (Guillaume-François). De l'Ordre... - Lot 76 - Rossini
LE TROSNE (Guillaume-François). De l'Ordre social, Work followed by an elementary treatise on Value, Money, Circulation, Industry & Internal and External Trade. Paris, Frères Debure, 1777. 2 parts in one volume in-8, marbled calf, spine decorated, lemon title coin, red edges (Binding at the time). Goldsmiths, number 11539. - INED, n°2879. - Coquelin & Guillaumin, t. II, pp. 38-40. Original edition, rare. A renowned physiocrat, Le Trosne (1728-1780) defended all his life the principles of liberty and property, immutable values which he believed to be the basis of social order. He condemned any measure that could reduce the demand for agricultural products or that could cause the existing social order to diverge from the "natural order", i.e. anything that hindered population growth and the improvement of the lot of mankind. He also condemned indirect taxes on labour, on consumption and on the export of raw materials, and on the luxury of decoration, among others. (Spengler, p. 188). The book contains 11 speeches, including the one delivered in 1775 on the freedom of the internal grain trade. Chapter IX of the second part deals with trade between the metropolis and the colonies. Wet stamp on the title. Restorations to the binding (caps, two jaws and a corner), lower hinge cracked but still solid.
