LAW (bank of). - Set of 3 brochures published a few months before Law's bankruptcy. - Arrest of the Conseil d'Estat du Roy, Concerning the Bank & the Compagnie des Indes. From February 23rd 1720. A decree providing for the amalgamation of the Bank and the Company, the latter being responsible for the governance and administration of the Bank, which remains Royal. Law, while remaining Comptroller General of the King's Finances, is appointed Inspector General of the Indian Company and the Bank. The King transferred to the Company 50 million shares for the sum of £900 million, £300 million to be paid in the course of 1720, the remaining sum to be paid in monthly instalments over 10 years. - Arrest of the Conseil d'Estat du Roy, Concerning the Shares of the Compagnie des Indes, and the Bank Notes. Shocking announcement of the decrease in value of the Bank Notes and the shares of the Compagnie des Indes, thus indicating the failure of Law's system and its near bankruptcy. - Arrest of the Conseil d'Estat du Roy, which revokes it on May 21st, Concerning the Shares of the Compagnie des Indes, and the Bank Notes. Cancellation of the decision of May 21, 1720 (see previous exhibit) whose measures had aroused general indignation: The King being informed that the reduction of the Bank Notes, brought about by the Arrest of the 21st of this month, causes an effect contrary to Her Majesty's Intentions, & produces a general disturbance in the Trade... orders that the Bank Notes shall &continue to be &continue to have the same price, &for the same value.
