GAULTIER DE BIAUZAT (Jean-François). Complaints... - Lot 59 - Rossini
GAULTIER DE BIAUZAT (Jean-François). Complaints about the surcharges that the common people bear in all kinds of taxes. S.l.n., 1788. In-8, paperback, untrimmed, blue mute cover of the period, handwritten title piece on the back, red half-marocco shirt and modern case by Devauchelle. INED, no. 1990. - Stourm, p. 148. Original edition of one of the best exposition of the financial state at the dawn of the Revolution. Gaultier de Biauzat (1739-1815), lawyer in Clermont-Ferrand and deputy at the National Constituent Assembly, criticizes the fiscal system of the time, unfavorable to the Third State: This overview [must] convince of the enormity of the overloads that the People's People bear by the effect of the immunities of the Clergy (p. 240). This brochure made a great impression on contemporary opinion. ...] The author calls for proportional equality in its distribution and protests against exemptions and privileges (Leblanc, De Thomas More à Chaptal, no. 354). Copy as it appeared, having obviously belonged to a deputy of the Auvergne at the time: it bears the handwritten ex-libris of a man named Guessizol, a person whose name is cited by Gaultier Biauzat as one of the substitute deputies and volunteers of the national guards of the Puy-Dôme [sic] in the newspaper Les Révolutions de Paris, n°53, 1790, p. 82. Interesting provenance. Small stamp in red ink on the cover, unidentified. Dirt on a few pages.
