[DARIGAND] The Anti-Financial, or Statement... - Lot 47 - Rossini
[DARIGAND] The Anti-Financial, or Statement of some of the malpractices of which the Farmers General are guilty on a daily basis, & of the vexations they commit in the Provinces. Amsterdam, 1763. In-8, marbled calf, spine decorated, red title coin, red edges (contemporary binding). INED, No. 1276. Original edition of this violent pamphlet. Darigand, a lawyer at the Paris Parliament, was thrown into the Bastille for publishing this work. The book made a lot of noise at the time, and it was sought with as much eagerness as the police made the most vociferous searches to suppress it. It is not possible to speak out more vehemently against the farmer-generals, against the pruning receivers, and in general against all the employees of the board of directors. Darigand strongly opposes the way in which these kinds of overly multiplied taxes were collected at the time, which put individuals at the mercy of a swarm of rodent henchmen, known, in the old days, under the ridiculous name of "rats-de-cave". He paints with horror the vexations to which any father of a family was exposed on their part in certain provinces (Peignot, Dictionnaire des principaux livres condamnés au feu..., t. I, pp. 90-91). Exceptional copy constituted at the time by an amateur who gathered together 10 pieces related to the polemic caused by the Anti-Financier : - Supplement to the Anti-Financier. S.l.n.d. - The Key to Mysteries. S.l.n.d. - Antropophagy, or the Antropophagi. Amsterdam, 1764. Engraved copper frontispiece. - True interests of the fatherland. Rotterdam, 1764. - The Pure Truth, Answer of a prosecutor [...] on a work entitled: Answer to the Author of the Anti-Financial. S.l., 1764. - The Imaginary Comptroller General. S.L. n.d. Flipchart p. 45. - Patriotic song. On the Air: From Port-Mahon. S.l.n.d. To restore France, For him, give her back abundance, Change Finance, For that is all her evil [...]. - Answer
