EAST INDIA AND CHINA COMPANY. -ARREST of the King's Council of State, Establishing a new East India Company. From April 14, 1785. Paris, P. G. Simon & N. H. Nyon, 1785. In-4, 16 pages, in sheets - ARREST of the King's Council of State, Approving the Statutes and Regulations of the Compagnie des Indes. Of June 19, 1785. Paris, De l'Imprimerie royale, 1785. In-4, 16 pages, in sheets. Trace of a loose piece of paper on the first page. Set of 2 pamphlets. Exceptional meeting, in original edition, of the 2 royal decrees concerning the foundation of this new commercial company. After the "suspension" of the privilege of the East India Company in 1769, a new Company was created on June 3, 1785, at the instigation of Minister Calonne, under the name of East India and China Company. ...] Her Majesty was convinced that there was only one privileged Company which, by its resources, its credit, ... with the support of special protection, could usefully carry on the Trade of the Indies & China; She therefore accepted the proposal made to her by an association of Negotiators ... of Capitalists, whose faculties, zeal & intelligence are known to her, to exploit alone, for a limited time, the Trade of Asia .... Political care, the costs of sovereignty, & the inconvenience of an over-complicated administration having been the main causes of the losses suffered by the old Company, it seemed appropriate that the news should be entirely cleared up [...] (judgment of April 14, p. 2). The Compagnie des Indes will be managed by twelve Directors, having reached the age of majority, either Francis or naturalized; who will undertake the commitment to serve the Company well & faithfully . (article I of the June 19 ruling).
